It may roar but in stillness it remains at home
Hope you all had a glorious Christmas and are geared up for the New Year – 2013
The words below hit me like a ton of bricks just yesterday – the almighty presence of the Lord is forever around us, forever present and these verses just cemented my understanding of God and His unique ways…
(Please note I interchange God with Jehovah at times)
(New Kings James Version)
Verse 22: Do you not fear Me?’ says the Lord. ‘Will you not tremble at My presence, Who have placed the sand as the bound of the sea, By a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it? And though its waves toss to and fro, Yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.
Verse 23: But this people has a defiant and rebellious heart;
They have revolted and departed.
Verse 24: They do not say in their heart, “Let us now fear the Lord our God, Who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season. He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest.”
Verse 25: Your iniquities have turned these things away,
And your sins have withheld good from you.
(New Living Translation Version)
22 Have you no respect for me? Why don’t you tremble in my presence?
I, the LORD , define the ocean’s sandy shoreline
as an everlasting boundary that the waters cannot cross.
The waves may toss and roar,
but they can never pass the boundaries I set.
23 But my people have stubborn and rebellious hearts.
They have turned away and abandoned me.
24 They do not say from the heart,
`Let us live in awe of the LORD our God,
for he gives us rain each spring and fall,
assuring us of a harvest when the time is right.’
25 Your wickedness has deprived you of these wonderful blessings.
Your sin has robbed you of all these good things.
My notes: The Lord is mighty in all His ways. In this chapter of Jeremiah, God was reminding the Israelites about exactly who He is (not was) and his control over the universe we reside on comfortably and freely. He pressed for them to realise that He was the One who freed them from Egypt, separated the Red Sea for their safety and led them for 40 years through a scorching desert by day and a freezing cold desert by night. We cannot only remember Jehovah when we are going through the hard times – he appreciates our praise and worship when we are filled with joy.
He described his awesome power – Jehovah in doing this is showing us the abundance of His grace on our lives. We must remember that we are not here by accident – every step we take is ordained by Jehovah, we are allowed to be here because of Him. This very earth is His footstool. We need to begin to focus on his greatness in our lives, just the very fact of being alive is His mercy shown to us everyday we arise from bed. Be in awe of Him – and the order in which he has set the universe to respect our presence here on Earth.
The sea filled with endless gallons of water is bound by sand – commanded (perpetual decree) by the Lord of Hosts. This is astonishing – that for all the years that the Earth has existed – the sea is still in its designated place. The Sea may overflow on to land – or violently roar during storms against bulging rocks but when all is still it remains within its bounds. Isn’t this incredible! No human can manage such a creation as the sea – we just adjust to its vastness – build around it, use it for travel and feed on its inhabitants. But as for managing the sea and its operations – we are simply helpless – the Lord has sorted it all out for us!
An even greater creation is our bodies – functioning by the perpetual decree of the Lord – he has ordered each organ, each blood cell – each vessel to function together – as one to form an operational human body. Our bodies have the capabilities of healing itself – alerting us when extra help is required such as hunger pangs- Bear in mind that this same body survived for hundreds of years and I means hundreds. No organ has been changed or downgraded by Jehovah our God – we still possess the same powerful organs as Noah who lived till the very ripe age of 950 years (Genesis 9:29)!
After the great flood during the days of Noah, lifespan dramatically declined.
Could this be an example of God distancing Himself from us?
Most sceptics wonder ‘if there is a God why does He allow earthquakes, tsunamis to wipe us out’ – well check out verse 25 above – our sins, in fact our deliberate sins are pushing God further away from us – Jehovah is watching us turn away from Him and so turn away from His blessings. Jehovah is where our blessings lie – so if we move away from Him we loose His hold on us. This is an active choice we are making!
In our bid to be God-led individuals we need to draw God closer – much closer – be in awe of His glory – and appreciate His work on this earth for our benefit! He arranged the earth this way to accommodate us – He cares!
Just remember that Jehovah has maintained order in the universe by perpetual decree – an everlasting decree – a law that can never be broken accept by His own power. Therefore we should ask God to perpetually decree on our behalf in our lives- the spirit to seek His face more – prioritise Him and love him especially as He loved us first. We have had the best head-start ever!
This is my personal reflection on the verses above – I’ll love to know how you have interpreted it. Please send an email or drop a comment here!!!
(Long distance relationship series – still active😉👍)
